Gay’s not quite what it used to be

Monday’s child is fair of face
Tuesday’s child is full of grace
Wednesday’s child is full of woe
Thursday’s child has far to go
Friday’s child is loving, giving
Saturday’s child works hard for a living
But the child that’s born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay
Oops! There’s that word, “gay” again. It has become quite a contentious, tabloid making, sexual preference indicating word in its contemporary usage. Can we ever recite that old English nursery rhyme again without its modern day application coming to mind? Gay no longer simply means happy. There’s nothing simple about the word anymore. You’d picture two adult men who “want to be together” in an intimate, sexual relationship….and now, yes, marital union. Old England would have fainted at the prospect. New England advocates their rights and threatens to sanction African countries that have refused to accept it as a social norm. The Western culture goes for any and everything ; same sex marriages, bestiality, mother-daughter marriages, father-daughter marriages, mother-grand daughter marriages and there’s no boundary to their loss of values. Children address parents by first names. When they do call them Mom or Dad you’d likely hear “Oh, don’t be silly dad!” To which, dad would smile sheepishly. In Naija, you wouldn’t dare…and if you did, you wouldn’t know what sent you to the stars… a slap or two hundred. Abeg, the Nigerian government says “Gay” still means happy and lively; and we want to stick with that. Sunday’s child is still a happy child…not “gay” according to the West. The Nigerian government ministered on this one sha.

It's very important we don't get submerged in the perversive meaning of some words...
